A Sneak Peek into Lion Dance

The lion dance is a martial performance dated more than 1500 years ago. Initially, it was performed during the Lunar Chinese New Year to drive evil spirits away and to bring prosperity, good luck and peace for the upcoming year (Vasu, n.d.).

However, as time passes, as Lion dance is known to bring positive energy and beliefs, it began to be performed at grand events such as a business opening, a wedding ceremony, birthdays and other celebrations to create a festive atmosphere and to bring good luck, happiness and wealth (Vasu, n.d.).

During a lion dance performance, members are required to exert a huge amount of energy to display skillfulness, agility and strength, hence it was traditionally performed by only male artists. In order for the lion dance performance to happen, music instruments were essential (Vasu, n.d.).
